A homeowner in South Scottsdale recently called us because their drains were backing up, creating a messy and frustrating situation. As a plumbing company based in Gilbert, AZ, and serving the East Valley, we were happy to make the trip to assess the issue and provide a solution.
Diagnosing the Problem
When David arrived, he began his inspection and quickly discovered that the home’s old cast iron pipes were not only causing blockages but had also developed a leak. Cast iron plumbing, commonly used in older Scottsdale and Phoenix homes, can corrode and deteriorate over time, leading to restricted water flow and potential water damage.

What’s Wrong with Cast Iron Pipes?
A lot of older homes, usually built before 1970, have plumbing systems made with cast iron pipes. This was a popular choice because of its durability and sound-dampening quality. However, over time, cast iron pipes can succumb to several plumbing issues that require addressing by an expert plumbing contractor like David.
Corrosion
Cast iron is prone to rust and corrosion, especially if exposed to moisture and certain chemicals. This can lead to leaks and structural weaknesses.
Scale Buildup
Minerals and debris can accumulate inside the pipes, reducing water flow and potentially causing blockages. This can especially be a problem in Phoenix with our hard water and if there isn’t a water softener present, which was the case in this home.

Cracking and Leaking
As cast-iron pipes age, they can become brittle and develop cracks or leaks, especially at the joints. This was also an issue that was beginning to happen at this home in Scottsdale.
Tree Root Intrusion
Roots from nearby trees can infiltrate the pipes through small cracks or joints, causing blockages and further damage.
Limited Lifespan
Although durable, cast-iron pipes typically have a lifespan of 50 to 100 years. Older systems may need inspection and possible replacement. Since most of the homes that were built in Phoenix and Scottsdale in the 19070s were built with cast iron pipes, many of these homes’ plumbing systems are starting to reach the end of their lifespans.
The Cast Iron Pipe Repair Solution
To restore proper drainage, fix the leak, and prevent further issues, David removed the damaged section of cast iron pipe and replaced it with durable ABS piping. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a high-quality plastic piping material that is resistant to corrosion, lightweight, and easy to install. Unlike cast iron, ABS does not rust over time, making it an excellent choice for indoor plumbing repairs. This patch replacement resolved the immediate problem, allowing the home’s plumbing system to function properly once again. The homeowner opted for this cost-effective cast iron pipe patch replacement with ABS, which came to approximately $1,500.
Future Plumbing Service Options
While the patch repair solved the current issue, this homeowner may want to consider pipelining in the future. Pipelining is an excellent long-term solution for aging plumbing systems, as it reinforces existing cast iron pipes without the need for extensive excavation.
